Narendra Modi: Is he the chosen one?

Much water has flown in Narmada river before Modi came to power, much water has flown in Narmada even after he became Chief Minister of India's leading industrial state Gujarat. The difference is, this time he was able to divert the flow to those regions which need water and that's a big difference to a state that can't boast of any other river like Narmada. The predominantly arid state has long established itself as India's industrial hub, largely due to hardworking & entrepreneurial nature of Gujarat's people. But even they were not able to make much progress in agriculture, which is often touted to be backbone of India. Even in this age of technology & manufacturing, at least 50% of Indians depend on agriculture for a living. It's no wonder then Narendra Modi comes across as a great hope for many Indians, especially for farmers. He was able to show that impossible is possible, which is 10% growth in agriculture. Gujarat is able to sustain 10% growth in agriculture year after year, and that's something to be proud of for any Chief Minister, especially when you compare it to national average 3% or less. The question then is how did he manage to do that when none of the other states even with far better resources be it fertile land or year round supply of water were not able to achieve? Can others learn a thing or two from his success? Modi was successful in deploying a multi-pronged approach to uplift farmers. Uninterrupted electricity was provided by separating power lines to farmers & industries. Micro irrigation & check dams got a very big push to counter water scarcity. Contract farming proved to be a master stroke as farmers were able to sell their produce atleast an year before it reached the market. Krish Mahotsav, an exclusive event to promote networking & knowledge transfer among all the stake holders of agriculture is a massive hit. No wonder then Gujarati people want him to be their Chief Minister again and again.

Narendra Modi did't ignore industry either. Very few leaders or may be no one else in independent India was as successful promoting industry, when compared to Narendra Modi. The way he responded to Tata Nano's crisis is just an example of how fast he can react to an opportunity, and the result is Gujarat is on it's way to become a auto exports hub in the near future.

Administration skills aside, he is equally adept with politics. He knows how to get things moving. With his Sadbhavana yatra, he was able to successfully project himself as the tallest leader in BJP. Even Advani was side-lined, nobody even talks about Sushma Swaraj & Arun Jaitley now. Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister Bihar did blow hot & cold for sometime, now. But at the moment even he seems to have realized that he can't stop Narendra Modi from becoming the top leader in BJP.

The big question everyone asking now is, Is Narendra Modi ready for the top job of this country. To Narendra Modi's fans, he looks like the chosen one, it's a nobrainer to them. But to his so-called secular dis-tractors  he is not acceptable to minorities. That's why Gujarat's elections assume lot of importance in the scene of national politics. Perhaps, this will be the most watched election in Indian politics. Both, Narendra Modi's fans & haters will be on edge. Result of this election will tell us if Narendra Modi is on his way to Delhi. Personally, I wish he is, coz I haven't seen an outstanding administrator like him in a long time.

India says welcome to Walmart, Tesco et al.

When the going gets tough, India just dishes out couple of reforms to disrupt the slowdown!!
Yes, that's exactly what happened today. Indian govt. came out with a welcome note to MNC's like Walmart, Tesco to come and set up shop in India. The announcement of cabinet note, that allows 51% FDI in multi brand retail & 100% FDI in single brand retail means, MNC's like Walmart, Tesco stand a chance to compete for $450 billion retail market of India. That's not all, it's poised to double in just about a decade to $900 billion by 2020. I would say, the day is not far, when it would sound more like $2 trillion, hopefully by 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for MNC's who are struggling with slow down in their home markets.

India's growth story so far has been led by it's consumption. So, this move is very well thought out to attract FDI, which is going to help India build it's cold chain logistics, which will support farmers. It's going to result in a better deal to farmers, who are currently being squeezed by middle-men.

But, it appears that India missed a chance to time this move well. Had this been 2008, MNC's would have reacted exceptionally well to this announcement, but this is 2011. Eurozone crisis, talk of double dip recession in US, possible slow down in China and the possibility of property bubble in China do make them think long and hard before making a move. That means, even Indian markets would have to wait for a while before turning bullish on retail companies. All in all, there is a lot to cheer about this move.

Duke 200 to nuke the competition

Yes, you read it correctly. Duke 200, a product out of Bajaj's collaboration with KTM is going to say hello to Indian bikers this December. If it is specs you are after, then let me warn you they are incredible to say the least. Follow the jump:

http://www.ktm.com/gb/naked-bike/200-duke.html

With dry weight tipping the scales at 126kg and with loads of torque (20NM) coming early @ 6800 rpm, this sure is going to be lot of fun in corners. Looking at the combo 25bhp/20NM/126kg dry weight, competition better be worried. Indian market at the moment has only ZMR, R15 & CBR 250. To be frank Duke 200's specs look intimidating in the face of competition. ZMR clearly doesn't stand a chance with it's archaic engine coupled to FI. Even the impressive R15 will be outgunned by Duke 200's brute power, while CBR250 looks too heavy(almost 170kg) to keep up with Duke 200 from the specs. I'm beginning to wonder, are we looking at a true blue performance machine in the indian biking scene after RD350. Perhaps, Duke 200 will be as quick as RD350/Ninja 250 in quarter mile runs. That sounds like a mouthwatering prospect for indian bikers.

Working from Home??

Huh.. the great recession in United States of America was good for one thing!! surprised.. you get no points for guessing what the topic is. Of course it's working from home, now I don't know how real it is.. but i'm sure many of you would have already seen numerous links pointing to it. Some of them might be working.. some not so lucky!! why... the obvious hurdle of pay me so much to register before you proceed with the job, yeah that's right "there is no free lunch" remember :) These days i'm so curious to know how it works.. of course who wouldn't want to make a quick & easy buck!! but so far no luck.. besides being on a work visa in United states i'm afraid that i'm not eligible for these kind of jobs. So there goes my quest for easy buck..  fingers crossed, hope it works out. There might be a way after all :)
